Potential Space
A held & playful space for creative therapists
Home
“...sometimes, just sometimes, we come across a new and unexpected clearing, a magical place unanticipated in our daily thoughts, or even in our dreams, and when we do, we are so amazed that we cease even to wonder whether we will be able to find our way back home or, perchance whether this might in fact be our new home.”
(Robert Finch on desire lines)
This is what I hope for from our shared Potential Space; a space which feels like home, providing comfort and a sense of belonging, but also – with home being seen as a mirror of the self (Carl Jung & Clare Cooper Marcus) – somewhere that allows us as play, art, sand, music, dance & movement… therapists to explore and tender to the self and what’s alive in us.
Potential Space aims, more specifically, to provide a held and playful space for creative therapists to:
take a break from adulthood (rest/reset)
return to a state of child-like wonder and whimsy
discover, express & cultivate what’s alive in us
connect with our own & others’ inner potential
experience collective solitude & community spirit
attune somatically to the world around us
develop/share in creative practices that support self-care
The term ‘Potential Space’ you may recognise. Borrowed from Donald Winnicott - for I am a Winnicottian at heart - Potential Space is considered an intermediate area of experiencing that lies between our inner world and our outer reality; space in which we are able, given the right conditions, to play.
We already know as child therapists the importance of play and creativity in enabling our clients to express and thus discover/accept their authentic ‘true self’ more fully. Yet we forget as altruistic adults, and let’s be honest “reflexively reactive beings” (Pat Ogden), that we still have our own unmet potential and an innate desire to grow.
For me, this clearing in the woods, and the following of a desire line that proceeds it, is a discovery of this ‘potential space’ and therefore of my membership. It is a place, a home, where we can embrace the concept of possibility and engage playfully and curiously with our inner knowing; our inner selves; our inner child.
